The Things We Will Do For Our Kids!

Last month, my Dad found out that he had a genetic blood disorder called Factor 5 Leiden (It causes you to clot way more ofter that "normal" people). I talked to my Dr. about it and she told me that I absolutely had to be tested for it. Well, yesterday my sweet Dr. called me. I could tell as soon as I picked up the phone that something was wrong. She told me that I carried only one gene of the mutation (not two...that is such a blessing!) but we would have to treat my pregnancy way different now. She called Dr. BK (Memphis' main neonatologist) and they went through my new treatment regime! I am now taking shot of blood thinner (40 mg of Lovenox) once a day. For 3 weeks, I will go to my Dr.s office and have them check my blood count. (Can we say "human pincushion"?) Four weeks out from delivery, we will switch to a shot of heparin twice a day. Before my c-section, I will have to wear the circulation boots and then I will continue the shots for six weeks after delivery.
When she told me that the medicine was given by injections to the stomach, my legs turned to jelly. I had to sit down. I am TERRIFIED of shots! I even dreamed about it last night!!! My mom taught me how to do them yesterday, and I was fine with her doing it, just not me! I know over the next 6 months...I will become a pro at giving myself injections. I just have to get through that first one. Please pray for me...I woke up this morning dreading the shot that I knew was coming. I will update soon on how my new life with Factor 5 Leiden is going.

My sister in law had to give herself shots of heparin with both of her pregnancies. I believe she has the same thing. Me , I would have freaked out too, but she said it wasn't that bad after the first couple of times. Hang in there!

Hey,
I am sooo glad I found your story! I too have Factor Five Leiden and I didn't know it until after 2 miscarriages then the High Fertility specialist caught it! They put me on baby aspirin and Heparin shots and I kept my pregnancy to 36 weeks and had an Emergency C-Section due to Pre-Eclampsia....not related to Factor Five....Anywho all the scary stuff they say about an Epideral when on blood thinners....it's o.k. I promise...I was the same way and then met this wonderful antesesiologist whom said he did that all the time and I was just fine....Scared but just fine....My miracle baby is now 3! They will just have you go off the blood thinners a little while before your C-Section....
If you want to talk more feel free to hop over to my blog.....
I'll pray for you....
